University Lecturers might be heading for another ASUU strike as the November 22 deadline for the implementation of the 2009 agreement was due with nothing done yet by the Federal Government. The Academic Staff Union Of University(ASUU) national President is yet to decide on what the next line of action will be.He explained that the November 22 deadline was chosen by the federal government which has expired with nothing done.
Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, the ASUU National President revealed that he does not have the final say. He will only act on what NEC directs him. He said he cannot pre- empt NEC’s decision.
Transfer of Federal Government’s landed property to universities.
Setting up of Research and Development unit by companies operating in Nigeria and teaching and research equipment.
Payment of earned allowances. Amendment of the pension/retirement age of academics in the professorial cadre from 65 to 70 years.
That the existing FG/ASUU Agreement 2009 Implementation Monitoring Committee should co-opt the Federal Ministries of Finance, Labour and Productivity and Budget Office.
That the Committee should develop strategies and time lines to facilitate the implementation of the agreement and shall conclude discussions on the implementation of the deal for presentation by November 22, 2011.
NEC will meet very soon, a meeting will be held to decide the next course of action.
