Academic Staff Union of University, (ASUU) National President, Ukachukwu Awuzie has  reminded the Federal Government to quickly implement the 2009 agreement  to prevent any strike action by the union.

On the 26th of September 2011, the union embarked on a two weeks warning strike  to remind the Federal  Government of the agreement. At the expiration of  the warning strike, an (MOU) Memorandum Of Understanding was signed with the union, promising the  fulfillment of demands by 22 November 2011.

The lecturers were demanding for an extension of the retirement age of professors from 65 years to 70 years, fund for research and development, improved facilities and improved staff welfare.

“ I want to believe that government is just not being sincere about this whole issue. November is almost gone and as I talk to you, no action  has been taken concerning our demands”.

“ It is not like we are the ones that chose the November date”. “They gladly said they would implement everything in two months time”. Awuzie  called on well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government adding that the union would not be held responsibe for whatever steps the NEC might come out with.

“Government is forcing us to go on strike, even when we are resisting it” he said.
