Job Position: Senior Engineer-Capacity Planning (Transmission)

Reports To: Manager-Network Architecture & Strategy

Job Summary:
Collaborate with team members to improve overall network capacity and quality by focussing on Quality of Service and future network design in order to support business objectives and an ever changing business environment

Principal Functions:

Provide input to develop long term strategies for the design and planning of access, backbone and other transmission systems
Liaise with IT department to develop tools to automate information gathering on transmission network capacity
Provide detailed analysis of the current transmission network and how various programmes and initiatives will drive future network topologies
Deliver utilization reports which detail transmission capacity/ performance against agreed KPIs
Liaise with the Commercial and Engineering Planning teams on dimensioning the entire transmission network
Maintain detailed knowledge and database at all times of the entire transmission network including microwave assets, leased lines, etc
Track detailed transmission network designs for various roll-out phases
Provide inputs in the design and planning of microwave transmission network topology/ structure/ architecture with a view to optimizing resources
Provide inputs for long term frequency planning for transmission networks
Analyze network KPIs to form the basis for transmission capacity planning
Initiate quick wins to manage sudden network bottlenecks as a result of commercial promotions
Assist in generating long- and short-term capacity plans to match Commercial business plan
Develop and deliver capacity technical reports
Provide support in generating transmission network capacity forecasts
Keep abreast of global and local best practices with regard to transmission network capacity planning and design
Work closely with relevant stakeholders on the overall transmission network capacity plan
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the Manager-Network Architecture & Strategy

Educational Requirements:

First degree or equivalent in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering
Relevant postgraduate (M.Sc.)/ professional qualifications/ certifications will provide an advantage

Experience & Skills:

Minimum of 4 years directly relevant work experience

Ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate:
• Excellent knowledge of telecommunications transmission network architectures
• Expert-level transmission planning experience
• Excellent knowledge of transmission technologies used in 2G/ 3G mobile networks (microwave, SDH, ATM, optical)
• Excellent knowledge of microwave radio networks with design/ planning experience
• Expert-level experience in optimizing transmission network capacity and performance
• Expert-level experience in 2G and 3G RAN design and core network architecture
• Ability to challenge current thinking and suggest improvements and solutions
• Expert-level experience in using capacity planning tools like Cerion Intelligent builder and optimizer, Groundhog CapMo, Mentum Planet, etc
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
