Lagos:Over N50million property destroyed by fire in plank market
There was anger, wailing and tears in Lagos, on Saturday, as property worth over N50 million were consumed by fire at a popular plank market in the state.
The market, situated between Shagari and Gowon Estate along Ipaja road, had over 270 lock-up shops under a high tension wire.
Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at press time, It was gathered that some of the shop owners sighted a smouldering ember the night before, but were alleged to have turned a blind eye to it because it was far from their shops.
However, they did not know that their shops would also be affected when the fire reached its peak.
Biodun, a female plank seller in the market, who was a victim of the fire incident, lamented how she lost both capital and goods to the disaster.
According to her, she did not take the proceeds realised from the previous day sales home, adding that she had lost virtually all she had to the incident.
