China most wanted fugitive shot dead

Zhou Kehua was China’s most wanted fugitive, until just before 7am today, when police hunting him shot him dead in Chongqing, one of China’s largest cities. 42 year old Zhou Kehua was being hunted by police after a woman was killed during a bank robbery last Friday. Two others were injured. Zhou fled on amotorbike. He was believed to responsible for several murders and robberies since 2004.

Tens of thousands of soldiers were being used to search for the wanted man around the area where he was last seen. One police officer was shot on Sundayas he pursued Zhou.

The case gripped China; the search for the “class A” wanted criminal becoming the top trending subject on Chinese twitter. State TV announced he’d been shot by police officers this morning and showed a gruesome photoof the dead fugitive.Short interviews with people living nearby were broadcast, some telling the reporter that they “feel safe now, with him gone” and “I’m very happy to hear the news”.

Later today State TV is expected to show interviews with the officers who shot Zhou dead and a press conference will be held. The authorities see the end of this manhunt as a triumph for the security forces in a high profile case.
