Enugu university expels 107 students for forgery

The Vice Chancellor said this in Enugu, South-East Nigeria.
The Senate of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has expelled 107 direct entry students for obtaining admission with forged OND certificates.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Cyprian Onyeji, said this on Friday in Enugu during the institution’s 32nd matriculation ceremony.
Mr. Onyeji said the action was informed by the need to build a new university devoid of indiscipline, corruption, gangsterism, sexual harassment and other social vices.
The vice chancellor said that the institution admitted a total of 4,200 students in the 2012/2013 academic year.
“Just yesterday (Thursday), the Senate of this university approved the expulsion of 107 students at various stages of study who were admitted as direct entry candidates and were found to have gained admission with forged OND certificates,” he said.
“Let me sound a clear note of warning that impersonation at examination attracts expulsion from the university.
“To stem the incidence of impersonation at examination, the university is currently capturing biometric data of all students and from this session, every student will be required to undergo biometric identification at examination halls,” the university boss added.
Some of the matriculating students expressed happiness with their admission into the school.
Nnenna Ibeh, a matriculating student of law, said she was happy to have gained admission into the school three years after leaving secondary school.
“I wrote JAMB three times just to be here and I am happy because my efforts are not wasted,’’ Ms. Ibeh said.
Another matriculating student, Ndudi Onyeife, promised to take his studies seriously to complement the efforts of his parents toward paying his fees.
The highlight of the event was the conferment of an excellent VC award on Mr. Onyeji by the students of the institution.
Many of the students celebrated with their loved ones after the ceremony.
