Zimbabwean woman tramples her new-born baby to death, buries the body
A FORT Rixon woman has appeared in court charged with infanticide after allegedly stamping her newly-born baby to death and burying the body in a shallow grave.
Sharai Moyo, 25, of Mpalawani village in Fort Rixon, some 77 kilometres north-east of Bulawayo, was last week remanded in custody to October 16 when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove.
The court heard that Moyo gave birth to a baby boy at midday on October 4 and decided to kill the infant.Prosecutor Concilia Ncube said Moyo, who was pregnant, developed labour pains at about mid-day while at her homestead.
She then went to a bush some 100 metres away from her home where she gave birth to a baby boy.
Soon after delivering, Moyo trampled the baby to death before digging a shallow grave and burying the infant.
However, about four hours later on the same day a neighbour became suspicious and confronted Moyo who admitted killing the baby.
A report was made to the police leading to her arrest.
The body was exhumed and taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
