Simone Manuel Becomes First Black Woman To Win Individual Olympic Gold Medal In Swimming

American swimmer Simone Manuel made history on Thursday in the women’s 100 meter freestyle as she became the first black woman to win a gold medal in an individual Olympic swimming event, tying with Canadian Penny Oleksiak.

The 20-year-old Stanford University student also set an Olympic record time of 52.70. Simone couldn’t fight back the tears when she realised she had gotten a gold medal.
